Just outside Clarkdale, Jerome Valley Cemetery (also known as the Old Pioneer Cemetery) preserves an important chapter of Yavapai County's history. Established in 1917, the cemetery became the final resting place for miners, railroad workers, local families, and early residents from Jerome, Clarkdale, and surrounding communities. During the 1918 influenza pandemic, the cemetery saw a substantial increase in burials, reflecting the impact of one of the deadliest public health events of the early 20th century. As you walk through the cemetery, you may notice that some graves are identified with numbers rather than names. Over the decades, many original grave markers deteriorated, were damaged, or disappeared, and some historical burial records were lost. As a result, not every burial can be easily identified today.
