Have you ever come across something so random yet striking that you ended up looking up its history? For me, it was this outhouse! I know it’s nothing special, but this just happened to catch me off guard, and my train of thought snowballed into thinking about how it came to be, the significance of the crescent moon, and its different names across continents. Luckily, sources are abundant on the internet. Here are some random facts about Outhouses:

• “Outhouse” used for a toilet, is a distinctly American term. “Privy” - an abbreviated form of the word “privacy”; is used in North America, Scotland, and Northern England. An outdoor toilet in Australia and some parts of Canada is called a “Dunny.”
• Gong Farmers are those whose profession was to dispose of outhouse contents.
• A Crescent moon or a circle-star design was said to serve two purposes: light and designation for male or female.
• Old magazines and newspapers were used in place of toilet paper. 
• The “fragrance” was dealt with by dumping a can of lime or even kerosene directly into the hole.
