Fall Planting And Maintenance Tasks

As you may have noticed Fall is in the air. Make sure that your home and garden is ready for the cool weather by completing a few quick tasks that will benefit you through the Winter, Spring and even into next Summer.

As the leaves change and fall, be ready to compost them and create your own organic fertilizer for the coming months. This is a very simple, no cost way to ensure that your plants have the nutrients that they need come springtime. One of the best things that you can add into your compost comes in the form of discarded vines, corn stocks or other plant matter that you may have accumulated through the Spring and Summer seasons.

While you are in the garden, now is also the perfect time to plant tulips or daffodils. These plants tend to thrive in our high desert climate and are so simple to plant. Both will thrive in virtually any soil if there is good drainage. Just make sure to plant your bulbs BEFORE the first frost, which will make it easier to dig.

Once you are done with the gardening tasks make sure that hoses are stored correctly. Drain all water from the hose and remove attachments, coil loosely and store away from the ground so insects are not tempted to move in! For maximum longevity, keep your hoses in your garage or tool shed.

Inside your home, now is a good time to change out air filters for your heating and A/C systems. This is a simple and inexpensive way to ensure that your system will be operating to its full capacity. On average you should be changing out your air filter every 6 to 12 months, unless you have pets, in which case it should be changed every 60 days.

Make sure to do a quick walk through and examine your roof for any leaks or water damage. At the same time, you can take a glance at window panes and glass to ensure that there is no damage. This is a two-prong approach, as you will save money on not only your utility bills for the season, but also on possible costly repairs in the future.

As you know, your home is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) investment most people will make in their lives. By maintaining things properly, you will have a home that is not only visually appealing, but also truly a safe haven for your loved ones.
